10 Stages of Genocide
1- Classification - Already within the land of the Balkans, there were distinguished Bosnians, Croatians, Serbians, Russians, etc.
2- Symbolization - the Bosnians and Croatians were perceived as "toxic and destructive to the purity" of the Serbian's religion, driving the “ethnic cleansing"
3- Discrimination - Anyone who was a Roman Catholic Christian, a Muslim, or just not an Orthodox Catholic Christian, was labeled as either a Croat or Bosnian by the Serbians.
4- Dehumanization - Raped, murdered, and moved the innocent citizens, especially women and kids, and treated them as if they weren't worth of any importance
5- Organization - Milosevic and Yugoslavian Army planned and organized each attack
6- Polarization - "Siege of Sarajevo" - Polarized specifically Bosnians in Serbia at first
7- Preparation - Named the goal as "ethnic cleansing"
8- Persecution - Killing of all Bosnians - Women and children were especially targets - Muslim religion was also
9- Extermination -Snipers hid in the hills and shot at civilians as they tried to get food and water. More than 8,000 were killed and more than 15,000 were "expelled" from their towns and sent into internment camps.
10- Denial -In order to conceal their crimes, Serbian forces dug up the original graves of many victims and moved them across a large piece of territory.
